A tiny school with only four pupils on a breath-taking Herm island in the English Channel is looking for a new teacher

A school with only four pupils in Herm on the Islands of Guernsey is recruiting a new teacher, following the departure of the previous post-holder who had taught at the school for the past 18 years. It is the Channel Islands’ smallest school located in one of the smallest and quirkiest islands of the Islands of Guernsey, Herm.

Herm is a tiny island that is car-free in the English Channel. The successful candidate will look after the education of only four local children in partnership with Herm’s umbrella school, Vauvert Primary, on mainland Guernsey. Alongside a minimum salary of £37,500 and a management allowance of £6,500, the new teacher will enjoy the chance to live amidst Herm’s breath-taking views, world-class sandy beaches and charming local lifestyle.

For those looking to enjoy a less permanent stay on Herm, you can enjoy a weekend trip exploring the tranquil island’s unspoilt sand beaches, cliff paths and abundant wildlife, including a puffin colony in spring and summer. Visitors to Herm this summer can get their groove on at HermFest (12 July – 14 July), dine under the stars on Shell Beach or even face their fears on a Haunted Herm Ghost Tour.

The island is also just 15 minutes by ferry from Guernsey. Guests can choose to stay at the charming White House Hotel, in a self-catered cottage or at a local campsite, and can taste local produce, recently heralded for its quality by Michelin-starred chef Michael Roux Jr, at the Mermaid TavernShip Inn or The Conservatory.

Flight times from the UK are as little as 40 minutes and ferry sailings from three hours. Visitors can opt to take the ferry over the Channel from Poole or Portsmouth or fly directly from the UK with Aurigny airlines.

Aurigny operate year-round direct flights to Guernsey from London, East Midlands, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Dublin. New flight routes to Guernsey from London Stansted and London City launched in spring 2024. Return flights start at £109.98 per person.
