Birmingham Airport: Urgent updated advice issued to all passengers on 100ml liquid limit rules ahead of summer holidays

Birmingham Airport has issued urgent updated advice surrounding its 100ml liquid limit rules ahead of the summer holidays. It comes after there has been much confusion around the rules as the UK airport was one of the first to meet the government deadline to implement the new security screening standards on 1 June.

Despite the airport installing the new security screens for passenger and cabin baggage, it has warned that certain liquid restrictions still remain in place. The airport says that in due course the new security will allow liquids of up to two litres to be taken through in cabin baggage but for now some restrictions temporarily remain in place. Until further notice, passengers are advised that they can only carry liquids up to 100ml.

The 100ml liquids can stay in hand luggage and no longer need to be in a plastic bag when departing from Birmingham Airport but they must not exceed the 100ml. The airport has invested £60m in its new larger security area installing simpler, streamlined equipment.

Al Titterington, terminal operations director for Birmingham Airport said: “Once we receive the regulatory approval that will allow two litres to be carried as hand luggage through Birmingham Airport, we will then be able to transform the customer experience with this world class security screening equipment. In the meantime, customers are reminded that they can only carry up to 100ml in their hand luggage and certainly no bottles/cans of water, carbonated or soft drinks over 100ml.  

“Plastic bags for liquids are not required, and electricals can stay in hand baggage too, no longer needing to be presented separately. The airport looks forward being able to announce when it receives its regulatory approval for the carriage of two litres, until this time customers should prepare as above.”

Listed below is the customer advice on liquids when travelling out of Birmingham Airport. 

• Customers can only take liquids, pastes and gels up to 100ml in their hand luggage. 
• The quantity of individual items at 100ml is unlimited.
• Liquids should not be in plastic bags, just loose in hand luggage.
• Liquids, pastes, and gels stay in hand luggage during the security search area, do not remove them.
• No liquids, pastes or gels over 100ml are allowed through security.
• No bottles/cans of water, carbonated or soft drinks over 100ml can be carried through in hand luggage.
• Insulated water bottles can be carried through security but need to be empty, refill stations can be found here.
• Leave all electricals in hand luggage during the security search.  
• When going through security please ensure all items are out of pockets including phones, keys, coins, and tissues etc. Watches can be left on.

Due to the upgrade to security halls at the airport there have been some changes to check-in zones. The airport also advises passengers to arrive at the airport when the airline’s check-in desk opens to avoid unnecessary queues.

Listed below is advice from Birmingham Airport to all passengers who are departing from the site this summer. 

• Arrive at the airport at the time the airline’s check in desk opens, even if checked in online and only carrying hand luggage.
• This check in opening time can be found on booking details. 
• Once on-site, join the security queue as directed by Airport colleagues. 
• Do not arrive before this time as check in may not be open. 
• Travelling with Jet2 or TUI before noon? You can drop your bags off the day before. On the day you travel, make your way to join the security queue on the ground floor. 
• Check-In Zone inside the terminal: ➡ Zone A for Jet2, Zone D for Emirates, Zones B & C for all other airlines 
• The new security area construction works are still on-going. This means the queuing area for security may start on the ground floor.   
• Please note that all passengers arriving by train are required to head to the ground floor to join the queue for security.
