A runner who represented Scotland in the 1500m in the Commonwealth Games has died aged 38.

Alastair Hay has died, Scottish Athletics has confirmed. He was a multiple Scottish champion, and also became an accomplished marathon runner, coming in at 2hrs 27min in Frankfurt last year, according to World Athletics.

He ran for Central AC in Scotland, and the club, which sent condolences to Lynsey and their two boys, said that the “legend was a towering figure in every sense in our endurance community and club scene for more than 20 years”.

Central AC said: “It is with deep sadness that we would like to inform members and friends of the passing of Alastair Hay. Ali was an outstanding performer for Central for over 20 years. Moreover, he was an even better friend to all within the club, incredibly kind spirited, and a great supporter of the club and all its athletes.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife Lynsey, his young sons and all his family. A memorial and funeral service will be held at West Lothian Crematorium on Thursday 27 June at 11am for all to attend.”

At his highest point he was ranked 281st in the world in the 5000m, as well as 364 for men’s road running.
