Ahead of Taylor Swift’s UK tour later this week, “The Tortured Poets Department” megastar has earned her latest award - who else won at the 2024 BMI Pop Awards?

Death, taxes and Taylor Swift picking up a music award; some things these days are certainties as “The Tortured Poets Department” singer picked up another award at the BMI Pop Music Awards overnight.

Held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, Swift was honoured with the Songwriter of the Year Award, with ten of her songs featuring on this year’s most-played songwriters and publishers. It marks her 65th BMI Award, having been honoured with the BMI President Award in 2009 and the BMI Taylor Swift Award in 2016.

This year’s BMI President Award recipient also had ties to Taylor Swift: Benny Blanco. Many of the producer’s collaborators sent in congratulatory messages including Lil Dicky and Ed Sheeran, who said the honour was “well-deserved” and thanked him for his “great friendship and fantastic memories.”

Sheeran went on to say, “We’ve made great music together and I’m so proud of you.” Sia then hit the stage for a striking tribute performance of Rihanna’s 2012 hit “Diamonds,” which she co-wrote with Blanco.

“I’m never not gonna live in the moment… and looking around at everyone and all of the things you’re achieving and hearing all of these amazing songs… I’m so proud because I’m thinking of how it felt when I won those awards” Blanco told the audience during his acceptance speech.

“We have the best job in the world, and we are so thankful and lucky to be in this room. We have the opportunity to make things better through music and help people. We’re giving the soundtrack to peoples’ lives.”

The BMI Pop Awards are an annual event that celebrates the creators behind some of the most popular songs in the music industry, created by Broadcast Music, Inc., a performing rights organization that represents songwriters, composers, and music publishers.

The awards specifically recognise the achievements of these individuals in the realm of pop music - with perhaps its closest UK comparison being the Ivor Novello Awards, which acknowledges the success of the songs from an artistic standpoint but also pays tribute to the creative minds behind them.

The awards ceremony began in 1952, aiming to honour the songwriters, composers, and publishers responsible for crafting the songs that dominate the pop music scene each year. It serves as a way to acknowledge and celebrate the talent and creativity of these individuals whose work resonates with audiences around the world.
