The 3210 holds a special place in the hearts of many

The Nokia 3210, one of the most beloved early mobile phones, has been relaunched to commemorate the device's 25th anniversary.

Nokia phone manufacturer Human Mobile Devices (HMD) said that it had brought back the "cultural icon" in response to growing consumer demand for simpler and more affordable gadgets as more people undertake a digital detox.

The 3210 holds a special place in the hearts of many, embodying a bygone era of mobile technology, and was one of the earliest mobile phones to achieve widespread popularity, particularly among millennials entering adulthood during its late 90s and early 2000s heyday.

For many people, the Nokia 3210 was their first introduction to the world of mobile phones, and is often tied to memories of late-night texting, playing Snake for hours and customising ringtones with the iconic monophonic melodies.

The 3210 was also renowned for its durability, with a robust build quality that meant it could withstand the bumps and drops of everyday life, earning it a reputation for being virtually indestructible.

Its durability has become the stuff of internet memes and urban legends, with countless stories and images circulating online showcasing the original phone's ability to survive extreme conditions.

But what will the new version of the classic phone be like, and what features will it come with? Perhaps most importantly, will it be as resilient as the original design of the phone? Here is everything you need to know.

What comes with the new Nokia 3210?

The revamped 3210 includes a two-megapixel camera with flash, supports 4G calling and will include a newer version of classic mobile game Snake to entertain users during their commute, HMD confirmed.

Users can easily insert their SIM card into this phone and enjoy the simplicity of basic calling and texting functions.

HMD says: “We had fewer apps in the noughties. Fewer channels to be present on. But were we any less in touch? Strip away today’s notifications from likes, shares, and comments, and what you’re left with are conversations with people you care about the most.”

The device comes in Scuba Blue, Grunge Black and Y2K Gold colours, but only somewhat resembles the old phone, which is partly due to an increase in screen size - the original 3210 had a small, 1.5-inch monochrome display.

The device offers the opportunity to revisit typing texts using a traditional number pad, but more modern features include an MP3 player, FM radio, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the inclusion of a USB-C port for charging convenience.

While the onboard memory is limited to 128MB - reminiscent of the 90s era - the phone does support microSD cards for expanding storage capacity.

And while the new Nokia 3210 will offer some modern features, it won’t support apps like WhatsApp, instead focusing on simplicity and affordability and catering to consumers who prefer basic calling and texting functions without the distractions of advanced applications.

Will it be indestructible?

The original Nokia 3210 was renowned for its durability, standing in stark contrast to the more fragile designs of modern smartphones.

The 3210 was primarily made of durable plastic, which provided a sturdy framework without adding excessive weight, and unlike modern smartphones with large, delicate touchscreens, the 3210 featured a compact and straightforward design.

In terms of the new device’s durability, HMD says the new Nokia brings back the original’s sense of durability and reliability - “take it out for long weekends, to festivals, on road trips, wherever – it will go the distance with you.”

How much does it cost?

The device is priced at £74.99, and it is available to buy right now from HMD.
