Scotland v Ukraine: will Qatar 2022 World Cup playoff match go ahead as Russia president Vladimir Putin starts war

Scotland are due to host Ukraine in their 2022 World Cup play-off clash at Hampden Park next month.

However, news in recent days has suggested Ukraine may be preparing for war after Russian president, Vladimir Putin, ordered troops across the border.

The Ukranian government has declared a 30-day state of emergency and a statement from the domestic league said that “due to the imposition of martial law, the championship of Ukraine has been suspended”.

The Scots are set to face Ukraine on 24 March - two days before the Ukranian Premier League will resume.

Uncertainty around Scotland’s World Cup play-off match may become clearer after tomorrow’s emergency Uefa meeting.

In a statement made by Uefa, they have claimed the executive committee will “evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions” with “further communication made after the meeting”.

Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine will also have an impact on their World Cup play-off tie against Poland, while the European governing body are also intending on moving the Champions League final from St Petersburg.

Scotland’s women are due to play their next World Cup qualifier in Ukraine on 8 April.
