The shocking moment a drunk driver was spotted sleeping at the wheel before speeding off at 100mph

Police have released a shocking video of a woman who fell asleep drunk at the wheel before speeding off at more than 100mph.

The footage, which was filmed by a member of the public and police bodycams, shows the motorist sleeping in the driver’s seat with vomit outside the car door.

When confronted she woke up and sped off - mounting a curb and then hitting speeds of more than 100mph.

What the woman was sentenced to

The unnamed woman, who was pursued by a member of the public after being seen speeding and driving ‘erratically’ on the A40, was banned from driving for 20 months, received a 12 month community order with an eight week electronic tag order.

She was also required to complete 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) days and received a fine of £180.

The footage was released by Gloucestershire Constabulary as drivers are being warned not to get behind the wheel after drinking this Christmas with the launch of the annual Anti-Drink and Drug Driving campaign.

A police spokesperson added: "The woman then drove off before mounting the curb. The concerned member of the public called the police and began to safely follow the driver, updating police on her location.

"The woman travelled eastbound along the A40 where she drove erratically at speeds of up to 100mph, swerving across the road and narrowly missing other road users.

"The woman was travelling at such excessive speeds that the caller lost sight the driver when she turned off in the direction of the village of #Whittington.

"The woman’s car was located in a housing estate outside of her home address where officers found the driver slumped in a chair, smelling strongly of alcohol and had slurred speech.

"The driver was arrested for drink driving related offences and was later charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath.

"The woman was disqualified from driving for 20 months and received a 12 month community order with an eight week electronic tag order. She was also required to complete 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) days and received a fine of £180.

"As our Roads Policing Officer Tim Griffiths says to the driver, she was lucky not to have killed herself or anyone else".

Police ‘will be out in force over the Christmas period’

Motorists have been told they can expect to see more roadside police checks both in urban and rural areas across the county when the festive clamp-down begins.

Chief Inspector Alistair Barby said: "We will be out in force over the Christmas period and would ask that people consider their actions before getting behind the wheel.

"We all know of the profound impact that driving after having been drinking or taking drugs can have on people, and so we will be ensuring that those who ignore this advice will be targeted.

"It is important that those people understand the consequences of their actions."
