All kidding aside, I look forward to the box office figures - because should it be a commercial success and not another “Battleship,” then we’re off to the races in terms of film and television adaptations from our childhood. 

Our childhood being those of us born around the 1980 to 1986 mark, who grew up and were coherent towards the colourful adverts for things we didn’t think we wanted, but sure enough were asking our parents for after the successful promotion during the Saturday morning cartoon spot. 

Did I really need Micro Machines or a Mighty Max, knowing full well that I would happen to lose one part of a Mighty Max set in particular that it becomes redundant? No, but it wasn’t a matter of what was practical, it was a matter of what was cool and being talked about. New toys on the playground were akin to water cooler gossip in an office; the more salacious the item, the higher up the social hierarchy you went.

But for all the success that “Barbie” hopes to bring Mattel, there is a concern that it sets a dangerous trend, much like superhero movies or Beanie Babies suffered, of an oversaturation of the marketplace. We’ve already seen stories that “Barney” is set to be rebooted as more of a young adult feature than a children’s piece, while a casual scan through “Mattel Films” on Wikipedia reveals titles such as “Magic 8 Ball,” at one point to be produced by horror powerhouse Blumhouse, and however they manage to make a story about the View-Master - another title Mattel Films are, pardon the pun, playing around with regarding a film.
